Beyond Borders
Apr 24 @ 7:00 pm

The West Liberty Education Association and West Liberty League of United Latin American Citizens is hosting the documentary “Beyond Borders-Undocumented Mexican Americans” on Monday, April 24th at 7 pm at the New Strand Theatre. It is Free and open to the public and includes a panel discussion afterwards.

Two West Liberty organizations will present the documentary Beyond Borders: Undocumented Mexican Americans on Monday, April 24th at 7:00 p.m. at the New Strand Theatre, 111 E 3rd Street in West Liberty, IA. A panel discussion on issues facing eastern Iowa immigrants and ways to support them will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

This event is a collaboration between the West Liberty chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens and the West Liberty Education Association. Both LULAC Chapter 310 and the WLEA wish to show support and respect for all members of our local and school communities. No matter how people have come to our community and our schools, they are valued members who we celebrate.

Beyond Borders depicts the experiences of undocumented Mexican Americans in vivid detail. It shows the humanity of people struggling to make a better life for themselves and their children despite the dangers their status creates.

Following the documentary, a panel of community members and advocates will talk about issues facing undocumented residents of eastern Iowa as well as ways to support this vulnerable population.

Panelists will include: Manuel Galvez, owner of El Trueque, an eastern Iowa Spanish language publication; Trey Sucher, immigration attorney with offices in West Liberty, Perry, and Marshalltown; Carolyn Colvin, University of Iowa professor who has taught ESL and citizenship classes in West Liberty for twentyfive years; and Natalia Espina, representative for the Eastern Iowa Community Bond Project that seeks to assist immigrants with bond in case of detention.

The owners of the New Strand are donating its use for this event. The New Strand is a thoroughly restored historic theater that first served as an opera house when originally opened in 1910.
